When a child has diabetes it can be a stress factor for many parents and children, however there are important tips that can help take care of the child with diabetes to maintain quality of life and that include:
- Always eat at the same time, with 6 meals a day;
- Offer a diet rich in foods with fibers and low glycemic index, such as beans, apple or spaghetti. See a complete list of foods with low glycemic index;
- Do not offer foods high in sugar, and can substitute for sweetener;
- Avoid having candy and treats at home, to avoid the temptation of the child;
- Offer, at birthday parties, unsweetened candies such as diet gelatin, popcorn with cinnamon or diet biscuits for children not to feel excluded. See a great diet cake recipe for diabetes;
- Encourage the child to do exercises such as soccer, dance or swimming;
- Giving care to the child after doing blood glucose tests or administering insulin;
- Let the child participate in your treatment, for example by letting the finger pick the stick or hold it in the insulin pen;
- Inform the school about the health situation of the child, so that candy is avoided and for the education of the class in this area.
These tips should be adapted to the child's age, and as it grows, parents should teach about the disease, explaining what it is, why it happens and how it can be treated.
