Domestic violence is a type of violence that happens inside the home of the individual or in the family environment. Domestic violence may involve child abuse, physical assault, elder abuse, violence against women, or abandonment of individuals considered incapable of caring for themselves.
This type of violence occurs between members of the same family and causes the destruction of many homes.
Types of Domestic Violence
- Physical Violence: Physical aggression is done directly and can be against any member of the family. When physical aggression is constant, the victim usually does not manifest himself because he feels frightened and helpless before the aggressor.
- Psychological Violence: This type of violence involves verbal aggression, punishment and humiliation. The victim feels coerced and likely to develop psychological disorders.
- Socio-Economic Violence: This type of violence occurs when the aggressor has complete control over the finances and personal belongings of the victim. There are usually threats and emotional blackmail.
Other factors such as alcohol and drugs can contribute to domestic violence, as some of the individuals who ingest these substances tend to become more irritated and aggressive. When an individual is the child of aggressive parents, he or she is likely to follow this behavior, developing internal conflicts, low self-esteem, and tending to promote domestic violence in their future home.
