The IQ, or intelligence quotient, is a scale that helps to assess, and compare, the ability of different people in some areas of thought, such as basic mathematics, reasoning or logic, for example.
The IQ value can be obtained by carrying out tests that evaluate only one of these areas or several. This means that the value obtained in a given IQ test is not considered an absolute measure of intelligence, but only serves to compare the people who took the same test and who evaluated the same areas of thought.

This is one of the most complete IQ tests, which assesses various brain areas through a thought process known as "abstract reasoning".
Understanding the test result
People who perform close to the average get a result close to 100. From then on, people who perform less than the average have IQs below 100 and people who perform better have an IQ above 100.
What is IQ for?
The main advantage of knowing IQ is to perceive how easy it is for a person to learn new things or to perform a certain function. That is, people with a higher IQ generally need less information to learn something new or are better suited to perform a role, while people with a lower IQ need more time and more detailed information.
IQ assessment can therefore be a good tool to apply to children, as it provides important data to know which children need more attention during the learning process, for example.
IQ can also be applied to adults and is usually done to assess the ability of each person within a group, in order to identify those who have the most appropriate thinking skills to perform a given task.
Does IQ help predict success?
Although IQ is often seen as a way of assessing someone's ability to succeed, the truth is that IQ is not the only predictor of success. That's because successful people need other skills that are not assessed with IQ tests, such as ambition, persistence or a sense of opportunity.
In addition, a person who has a high IQ for logic, for example, may not be successful if he needs to perform tasks related to other areas of thought. It is for this reason that IQ tests must always be adapted according to the skills that are intended to be assessed.
How to measure IQ
The value of IQ is measured through tests that present a set of questions and that allow to evaluate different areas of thought. There are tests that can evaluate only one thinking skill, while others evaluate several. The more areas that are included in the test, the greater the chances of obtaining a result that is close to the true mental capacity of each person.
However, there is no test that is 100% capable of assessing someone's intelligence, as it would become extremely extensive and time-consuming. In addition, it would be practically impossible for a single test to take into account all the factors that may end up influencing the result and that are not directly related to the thinking process.
What can influence the result of the IQ?
Genetics is the main influencing factor of IQ, as it determines how information processing takes place in the brain. However, there are other factors that can influence IQ and that are not evaluated in the tests, such as:
- Willingness to perform the test;
- Presence of any chronic illness or other concern;
- Country and place where you grew up;
- Access to quality education;
- Economic situation;
- Occupation of parents or family members.
Many other social, environmental and economic factors appear to influence the outcome of the IQ, which demonstrates that the IQ value is not a completely correct measure for assessing the thinking process or intelligence.
