Carboxytherapy is a good treatment to get dark circles under small injections of medical carbon dioxide under the skin with a very fine needle. This treatment is indicated to lighten the skin around the eyes and to fight against the swollen dark circles, characterized by small 'pockets' under the eyes.
The price of each session of carboxitherapy for dark circles ranges from 50 to 200 reais, depending on the clinic where the treatment will be performed.
How carboxytherapy works
Carboxytherapy consists of applying small injections of carbon dioxide that penetrate the skin, which act to improve the blood circulation of the region around the eyes and increase the production of collagen, which leaves the skin around the eyes firmer and clearer.
Side effects
The side effects are brief and transient and include pain during the procedure and for a few minutes to follow. It is normal for the region to become tender and slightly swollen within the first hour after treatment.
The carboxytherapy for dark circles causes some discomfort, but is bearable, and the use of anesthetic creams before each application helps in pain control. The temporary discomfort that lasts only a few minutes, but putting cold compresses soon after and doing a lymphatic drainage facial also help improve the results bringing more comfort and satisfaction.
How many sessions to do
This treatment really works, but for best results it is recommended to do at least 5 sessions at 1-week intervals. However, depending on the degree of darkening and depth of dark circles it may be necessary to do between 8 to 10 sessions.
You can measure the success of the treatment by taking pictures with the same camera, position, distance and lighting before and after the final treatment.
The results of carboxytherapy treatment for dark circles last on average 6 months and after this period the treatment should be repeated again.

Care after carboxytherapy
Shortly after doing the sessions of carboxitherapy it is normal the appearance of swelling in the eyes that lasts about 5 to 10 minutes, and after that time, one can resume the normal daily activities, being able to work or to study, for example.
After each session of carboxitherapy for dark circles is recommended:
- Do not expose to the sun for 3 days, and always wear sunscreen, specific to the face, taking care not to leave in direct contact with the eyes;
- Use dark circles creams that may prolong the results of carboxytherapy, such as hydroquinone, tretinoin, or kojic acid, azelaic acid, and retinoic acid. See some more examples in: Dark circles creams;
- Always wear sunglasses when outdoors, even if there is only light and not direct sun;
- Not rubbing the eyes is also advised, because this habit also aggravates the darkening of dark circles.
As stress and bad nights sleep also make dark circles worse, it is important to rest properly, to eat healthy and nutritious and to avoid stress.
Why Are Dark Circles
Dark circles are dark circle-shaped marks around the eyes that arise due to mainly genetic factors, after an inflammation in the skin of the face due to some allergy, swelling around the eyes, excess blood vessels in that region, but the sagging of the skin due to aging also contributes greatly to its appearance or aggravation.
Dark circles may be brown, reddish or purple depending basically on genetic factors. Even children can be affected, and it usually gets worse with age. Some situations that aggravate dark circles are stress, rubbing the skin around the eyes and the use of eye drops to control glaucoma, which also make the dark circles under the eyes.
