Treatment for donovanose, which is a sexually transmitted disease, can be done with the use of antibiotics such as:
- Doxycycline for at least 3 weeks;
- Sulfamethoxazole (Trimethoprim) for at least 3 weeks;
- Ciprofloxacin, until the cure of the disease;
- Erythromycin for at least 3 weeks.
After the determined period, the patient should go to the doctor again to evaluate the healing process of the wounds and if the infection is already cured. In cases where the lesions are very extensive it may be necessary to resort to surgery to remove the wounds.
During the treatment of donovanose it is necessary to have no intimate contact. Individuals who have had contact with an infected person in the last 60 days should seek medical advice for tests.
To prevent contamination of donovanose, condoms are necessary in all relationships. However, prevention will only be effective if the infected area is covered by the condom, because in case of contact with open wound there is a chance of contamination.
