Orthopantomography, also known as panoramic radiography of the jaw and jaw, is an examination that shows all the bones of the mouth region and its joints, in addition to all the teeth, even those that have not yet been born, being a great assistant in the area of dentistry.
Although it is more used to identify crooked teeth and to plan the use of braces, this type of X-ray also serves to assess the bone constitution of the teeth and their disposition, allowing the identification of more serious problems such as fractures, changes in the temporomandibular joint, including teeth, infections and even some tumors, for example. The radiation level of this type of examination is very low, representing no risk to health, and it is very quick to perform and can be done on children.
How orthopantomography is performed
To perform orthopantomography, prior preparation is not necessary. The person must remain quiet throughout the procedure, which is done as follows:
- A lead vest is worn to protect the body from radiation;
- All metallic objects that the person has are removed, such as earrings, necklace, ring or piercing;
- A lip retractor, which is a piece of plastic, is placed in the mouth to remove the lips from the teeth;
- The face is correctly positioned on the equipment indicated by the dentist;
- The machine records the image that will then be analyzed by the dentist.
After registration, the image can be seen in a few minutes and the dentist will be able to make the most complete and detailed assessment of the health status of each person's mouth, guiding everything that may need to be done, such as root canal treatment, tooth removal. teeth, restoration or use of dental prostheses, for example.
