In order to sing better, it is necessary to focus on some essential aspects, such as improving breathing capacity, to keep a note without having to pause to breathe, improve the resonance capacity and, finally, to train the vocal cords and larynx, so that become stronger and produce more harmonious sounds.
Although some people are born with a natural gift for singing and do not need much training, the vast majority need to train to get a beautiful singing voice. So, just as you train your body muscles in the gym, whoever needs to sing, or has that desire, should also train the voice.
To ensure the best results, it is always best to take part in singing lessons and have a teacher who helps to train individual flaws, but for those who only need to improve their voice to sing at home or with their friends, there are X simple exercises that can improve the voice in a short time. These exercises should be done at least 30 minutes a day:
1. Exercise to increase respiratory capacity
The respiratory capacity is the amount of air that the lung can reserve and use and is very important for those who want to sing, because it ensures that you can keep a constant flow of air passing in the vocal cords, which allows you to keep a note for longer, without stopping to breathe.
A simple way to train the lungs and increase respiratory capacity is to inhale deeply and hold as much air as possible inside the lung, then slowly expire the air at the same time as the 'ssssssss' sound is made, as if it were a ball emptying. During the process of pouring the air out, you can count how many seconds it lasts and then go try to increase that time.
2. Exercise to warm the vocal cords
Before starting any exercise that uses the voice is very important to warm the vocal chords, because it ensures that they are ready to be well worked. This exercise is so important that it can even improve the voice in less than 5 minutes, but should be worked on frequently to ensure better results. In addition to heating the vocal cords, it also helps to relax the muscles responsible for the production of sounds. See other exercises that help you relax your muscles and improve your speech.
To do the exercise, one should make a bee-like sound "zzzz" and then go up the scale in at least 3 notes. When the highest mark is reached, it should be maintained for 4 seconds and then lowering the scale again.
3. Exercise to improve resonance
The resonance is related to how the sound produced by the vocal chords vibrates inside the throat and mouth, as it happens inside a guitar when pulling one of the strings, for example. Thus, the larger the space for this resonance to take place, the richer and fuller the voice is, making it more beautiful to sing.
To train the resonance capacity one must say the word " hâng ", while trying to keep the throat wide open and the roof of the mouth raised. Once you can do this, you can add an 'á' at the end of the word, resulting in " hâng-áá " and repeat several times.
During this exercise it is easy to identify that the back of the throat is more open and it is this movement that should be done when singing, especially when it is necessary to keep a note.
4. Exercise to relax the larynx
When the larynx becomes very contracted during singing, it is common to feel that a "ceiling" has been reached in the ability to sing more acutely, for example. In addition, contraction of the larynx also causes a ball-like sensation in the throat that may end up harming the way the voice is produced.
So whenever these signs appear, a good way to relax the larynx again is to say the word 'ah' and keep the note for some time. Then repeat the exercise until you feel that the larynx is already more relaxed and that the sensation of ball in the throat is disappearing.
