During the menopause some diseases like cysts, polyps or even cancer can appear because the hormonal changes characteristic of this phase facilitate their development or installation.
Taking hormone replacement naturally, or using medications, is an option to relieve the symptoms caused by menopause, but that is not always enough to avoid the risk of these diseases. So it is good to know what diseases can arise at this stage to go to the gynecologist in case of suspicion.
Some menopausal-related diseases are:
1. Cysts in the breast or ovaries
The main symptom of breast cyst is the appearance of a lump in the breast, which can be seen on breast self-examination or on ultrasound. When it causes pain or is very large, fine needle aspiration can be performed.
Cysts in the ovaries are very common due to hormonal changes, but they do not always generate symptoms. When they cause pain, or are malignant, the gynecologist can remove them through a laparoscopy.
2. Uterine and cervical polyps
Uterine polyps may not cause symptoms, but in some cases there may be heavy menstruation, bleeding after intercourse and pelvic pain. They are more common in women who have hormone replacement and those who have not had children. Its treatment can be done with medicines or surgery and rarely it turns cancer.
Cervical polyps can cause no symptoms or cause bleeding after intimate contact. They are diagnosed through the pap smear and can be removed with local anesthesia at the clinic, or at the hospital.
3. Uterine prolapse
Uterine prolapse is more common in women who have had more than one normal birth and causes symptoms such as lowering of the uterus, urinary incontinence, and pain in close contact. It is caused by the weakness of the pelvic muscles provided by low estrogen and its treatment is done through surgery to reposition the uterus, or withdrawal of the uterus.
4. Breast cancer or reproductive system
The most common cancers in menopause are those of the vagina, uterus, endometrium and ovary, which can arise due to hormonal changes. They can generate a variety of signs and symptoms such as burning on urination, vaginal bleeding outside the menstrual period, or pain during intimate contact.
Breast cancer can produce symptoms such as lump in the breast and discharge of fluid through the nipple and its treatment can last for months or years depending on its severity. Cancer treatment is time-consuming and may include radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or surgery.
