Psychogenic amnesia is a temporary loss of memory, which causes the individual to forget passages of events due to some psychological trauma, which can be aerial accidents, assaults, rapes or any other traumatic event. Individuals with this type of amnesia may have difficulty remembering recent events and even events that occurred before the trauma.
Psychogenic amnesia occurs because those memories that you can not remember trigger strong feelings of pain and suffering, and so the brain acts by blocking information as a defense mechanism.
The memory usually comes back after a few days, its recovery can be stimulated with the use of photos or objects that are associated with the forgotten information.
Psychogenic amnesia is a type of amnesia that is not associated with any type of brain injury, and should be treated through psychotherapy, which helps the individual regain his or her emotional balance by reducing the level of stress caused by the trauma.
