Domperidone is a medication used to treat poor digestion, nausea, and vomiting of adults and children for periods of less than one week.
This medicine can be found in generic or under the trade names Motilium, Peridal or Peridona and is available as tablets or oral suspension and can be purchased in pharmacies for a price between 6 and 45 reais depending on the size of the pack and of the pharmaceutical form.
What is it for
This medication is used to treat digestion problems often associated with delayed gastric emptying, gastroesophageal reflux and esophagitis, feeling of bloating, early satiety, abdominal distension, high abdominal pain, excessive belching and intestinal gas, nausea and vomiting, heartburn and burning in the stomach with or without regurgitation of gastric contents.
It is also indicated in cases of nausea and vomiting of functional, organic, infectious or alimentary origin or induced by radiotherapy or treatment with medicines.
How to use
Domperidone should be taken 15 to 30 minutes before meals, however, it can also be taken after meals, and its absorption is lower.
For adults and adolescents weighing more than 35 kg, it is indicated 10 mg up to 3 times a day, orally. In pediatric patients or less than 35 kg, it is 0.25 ml / kg body weight up to 3 times a day, orally.
Side effects
The most common side effects that may occur during treatment with domperidone are depression, anxiety, decreased sexual appetite, headache, drowsiness, restlessness, diarrhea, rash, itching, breast enlargement and tenderness, milk production, absence of menstruation, breast pain and muscle weakness.
Who should not use
This medication should not be used in people who are allergic to any component of the formula, prolactinoma, severe stomach pains, persistent dark stools, liver disease or who are using certain metabolic-altering or heart- the case of itraconazole, ketoconazole, posaconazole, voriconazole, erythromycin, clarithromycin, telithromycin, amiodarone, ritonavir or saquinavir.
