Thiabendazole is an antiparasitic medicine known commercially as Foldan or Benzol.
This topical and oral medication is indicated for the treatment of scabies and other types of ringworm on the skin. Its action inhibits the energy of the larvae and eggs of the parasites, which end up weakened and eliminated from the body.
Thiabendazole can be found in pharmacies in the form of ointment, lotion, soap and tablets.
Indications for Thiabendazole
Scabies; strongyloidiasis; cutaneous larvae; visceral larvae; dermatitis.
Side Effects of Thiabendazole
Nausea; vomiting; diarrhea; lack of appetite; dry mouth; Headache; vertigo; somnolence; burning of the skin; desquamation; redness on the skin.
Contraindications of thiabendazole
Pregnancy risk C; women in the lactation phase; ulcer in the stomach or duodenum; Hipersensibility to any of the formula's components.
How to use Tiabendazole
Oral use
Scabies (Adults and Children)
- Administer 50 mg of thiabendazole per kg of body weight in a single dose. The dose should not exceed 3g per day.
Strongyloidiasis
- Adults: Administer 500 mg of Thiabendazole for every 10 kg of body weight in a single dose. Be careful not to exceed 3 g per day.
- Children : Administer 250 mg and Thiabendazole for every 5 kg of body weight in a single dose.
Skin larva (adults and children)
- Administer 25 mg of thiabendazole per kg of body weight 2 times daily. The treatment should last for 2 to 5 days.
Visceral larvae (Toxocariasis)
- Administer 25 mg of thiabendazole per kg of body weight 2 times daily. Treatment should last 7 to 10 days.
Topic Use
Ointment or lotion (Adults and children)
Scabies
- At night, before going to sleep one should take a warm bath and dry the skin well. Afterwards, apply the medicine on the affected areas by pressing gently. The next morning, the procedure should be repeated but the medication should be applied in a smaller quantity. The treatment should last 5 days, if there is no improvement the symptoms can be continued for another 5 days. During this treatment it is important to boil the clothes and sheets to avoid any risk of renewal of the infection.
Cutaneous larvae
- Apply the product to the affected area by pressing for 5 minutes, 3 times a day. Treatment should last 3 to 5 days.
Soap (Adults and children)
- The soap should be used as a complement to the ointment or lotion treatment. Just wash the affected areas during the bath until enough foam is produced. The foam should dry and then the skin should be thoroughly washed. When leaving the bath apply the lotion or ointment.
