Trianterene is the active substance of a diuretic indicated for the treatment of edema associated with heart failure and cirrhosis of the liver.
This oral medication interferes with the reabsorption of sodium in the kidneys, leading to sodium and water excretion and retention of potassium.
Indications of Trianterene
Edema (associated with congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver and nephrotic syndrome).
Trianterene Side Effects
Diarrhea; nausea; increased potassium in the blood.
Contraindications of Trianterene
Pregnancy Risk B; Breast-feeding; Do not use the product if the potassium in the blood is greater than 5.5 mEq / L (normal potassium: 3.5 to 5.0 mEq / L).
How to Use Trianterene
Oral use
During or shortly after the meal.
Adults
- Start with 25 to 100 mg per day in divided doses. The maintenance dose should be established according to clinical response.
Adult dose limit : 300 mg per day.
Children
- Start with 2 to 4 mg per kg of body weight in divided doses. The maintenance dose can reach up to 6 mg per kg of weight per day.
