Symptoms of cyst in the marrow arise only when the cyst is large compresses the nerves and other structures. The symptoms of cyst in the bone marrow can be:
- Progressive weakness of the legs;
- Column deformation;
- Back pain;
- Spasms and tremors in the legs;
- Paralysis of the legs;
- Atrophy of muscles.
Some patients may experience loss of sensitivity to pain or heat, and burns and cuts in individuals with this lesion are common.
The cysts are small, fluid-filled sacs that grow in the spinal cord and are most common in the neck region, but can grow anywhere along the spinal cord. Usually, individuals are already born with cysts in the marrow, but for little known reasons, they only increase during adolescence or adulthood. The diagnosis of the cysts in the medulla is carried out with magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography.
Treatment for cyst in the medulla
The treatment for cyst in the bone marrow will depend on the severity of the symptoms presented by the patient. Treatment usually consists of draining the cyst to reduce pressure on the spine and prevent its recurrence or surgery to remove the cyst. If the cyst causes severe damage to the nerves of the spinal cord, the treatment may not be enough to recover the lost functions.
