Peptulan is the name of a remedy that contains colloidal bismuth subcitrate, which is indicated for stomach problems like gastritis, reflux and inflammation of the duodenum, being especially recommended to eliminate the H. pylori bacterium and facilitate the healing of the gastric ulcer.
This medicine forms a protective layer on the mucosa of the stomach, preventing the hydrochloric acid present in the stomach from damaging the healing of this wound.
Indications
Peptulan is indicated for the treatment of stomach pain caused by gastritis, ulcer in the stomach or duodenum, gastroesophageal reflux and inflammation of the upper portion of the intestine.

How to use
One should take peptulan according to medical advice but it is usually recommended to take 4 tablets daily for at least 28 days. A new course of treatment may be initiated after an 8-week break but not more than 4 tablets per day.
You can take peptulan in 2 ways:
- 2 tablets 30 minutes before breakfast and 2 tablets 30 minutes before dinner or
- 1 tablet 30 minutes before breakfast, another before lunch, another before dinner and the last 2 hours after dinner.
The tablets should be swallowed whole with a sip of water. It is not recommended to take fizzy drinks, take antacids or milk 30 minutes before or after taking this medicine, but it may be associated with other antibiotics and antifungal without any problem.
Adverse effects
It is normal for stools to become darker with the use of this medication, which is a natural and expected effect. Other symptoms that may arise are dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. When the medicine is used for prolonged periods that include more than 2 treatment cycles there may be darkening of the teeth or tongue.
Contraindications
In case of allergy to bismuth and in case of severe renal insufficiency. It should also not be used during pregnancy and during breastfeeding because it passes through breast milk.
