Hypothermia corresponds to the decrease in body temperature below 35 ° C, which can happen when the body loses more heat than it can generate, and is more frequent when it is left without adequate equipment in the rigorous winter or after accidents in water freezing, for example.
Hypothermia can be fatal as it can lead to freezing of tissues or organs and is therefore taking the necessary steps quickly to increase body temperature and avoid complications.
First aid in case of hypothermia
First aid for hypothermia should be done as soon as possible to avoid stopping vital organs and include:
- Take the victim to a warm environment and trigger medical care;
- Remove wet or cold clothing;
- Put blankets on the victim and keep the neck and head well cushioned;
- Involve victim with hot water bags;
- If the victim is conscious and able to swallow without choking, you can give hot and sugared drinks to speed up the heating process.
After first aid, it is important to stay with the victim until medical attention reaches the area. See also how to identify the signs of hypothermia.
What not to do
In cases of hypothermia it is not recommended to directly apply heat, such as hot water or a heat lamp, for example, as it may cause burns. In addition, if the victim is unconscious or unable to swallow, it is not advisable to give a drink as it may cause choking and vomiting.
It is contraindicated, also, to give alcoholic beverages to the victim, since it can alter the blood circulation, also interfering in the process of corporal heating.
