Norestin is a contraceptive that contains the substance norethisterone, a type of progestogen that acts on the body as the hormone progesterone, which is produced naturally by the body at some point in the menstrual cycle. This hormone is able to prevent the formation of new eggs by the ovaries, preventing a possible pregnancy.
This type of contraceptive pill is usually used by women who breastfeed, as it does not prevent the production of breast milk, as happens in estrogen pills. However, it may also be recommended for anyone with a history of embolism or cardiovascular problems, for example.
Price and where to buy
NORESTIN can be purchased at conventional pharmacies with a prescription for an average price of 7 reais for each pack of 35 tablets of 0.35 mg.
How to take
The first pill of Norestin should be swallowed on the first day of menstruation, and after that it should be swallowed every day at the same time, without pause between the tablets. Thus, the new card must be started the day immediately after the end of the previous one. Any forgetfulness or delay in taking the pill may result in an increased risk of becoming pregnant.
In special situations, this pill should be taken as follows:
- Change contraceptive
The first Norestin pill should be swallowed the day after the end of the previous contraceptive card. In these cases, a change in the menstrual period can happen, being able to be irregular during a short period of time.
- Use after childbirth
After childbirth the use of Norestin can be done immediately by those who do not wish to breastfeed. Since women who want to breastfeed, should only use this pill 6 weeks after giving birth.
- Use after abortion
After a miscarriage, the Norestin contraceptive pill should only be used the day after the abortion. In these cases, there is a risk of a new pregnancy for 10 days and therefore other contraceptive methods should also be used.
What to do in case of forgetfulness, diarrhea or vomiting
In case of forgetting up to 3 hours beyond the usual time, take the forgotten pill, take the following pill at the normal time and use another contraceptive method, as a condom, until 48 hours after forgetting.
If vomiting or diarrhea occurs up to 2 hours after ingestion of Norestin, the contraceptive efficacy may be affected and therefore it is recommended to use another contraceptive method for up to 48 hours. The pill should not be repeated and the next pill should be swallowed at the usual time.
Possible side effects
Like any other contraceptive, Norestin can cause side effects such as headache, dizziness, vomiting, nausea, breast tenderness, tiredness, or weight gain.
Who should not take
Norestin is contraindicated for pregnant women and women with suspected breast cancer or who have abnormal vaginal bleeding. In addition, it should also not be used in cases of suspected allergy to any of the components of the remedy.
