Gaviscon is a medication that serves to relieve the symptoms of reflux, heartburn and poor digestion because it is composed of sodium alginate, sodium bicarbonate and calcium carbonate.
Gaviscon forms a protective layer on the walls of the stomach, preventing contact of the stomach contents with the esophagus, relieving the symptoms of indigestion, burning and stomach discomfort. The median time to drug initiation is 15 seconds and maintains symptom relief for approximately 4 hours.

Indications of Gaviscon
Gaviscon is indicated for the treatment of indigestion, burning, stomach discomfort, heartburn, dyspepsia, nausea, nausea and vomiting in adults and children from 12 years of age. It is also indicated for pregnant women and during pregnancy.

How to use Gaviscon
The method of use of Gaviscon varies according to the formulation and can be:

- Chewable tablets: 2 chewable tablets as needed, after main meals and before bed. Do not exceed 16 chewable tablets in 1 day.
If after 7 days of administration the symptoms do not improve, the gastroenterologist should be sought.
Side effects of Gaviscon
Gaviscon side effects are rare and include allergic reactions such as hives, redness, difficulty breathing, dizziness or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Contraindications of Gaviscon
Gaviscon is contraindicated in people who are hypersensitive to any component of the formula and to children under 12 years of age.
After taking Gaviscon, wait 2 hours for the use of other medications, especially antihistamine, digoxin, fluoroquinolone, cetaconazole, neuroleptics, penicillin, thyroxine, glucocorticoid, chloroquine, disphosphonates, tetracyclines, atenolol (and other beta blockers), ferrous sulfate, quinolone, alendronate, sodium fluoride and zinc. Such precaution is important because calcium carbonate, one of Gaviscon's ingredients, acts as an antacid and may decrease the absorption of these medications.
