To treat knee pain it is advisable to seek an orthopedist or physiotherapist as they will be able to diagnose the cause of the pain and thus indicate the best treatment.
Knee pain can have a number of causes, and whenever symptoms persist for more than 5 days, or whenever pain is too severe and difficulty walking, sitting, climbing or descending stairs, a doctor should be seen. But some helpful tips for treating knee pain while waiting for the consultation are:
1. Apply an ice pack
Especially if the knees are swollen, heated or reddish. Simply place a thin cloth towel (such as a clean dish cloth) over your knees and apply a bag of crushed ice or even a bag of frozen vegetables, letting it act for 15 minutes, twice a day.
See when it's best to use a hot or cold compress on the following video.
2. High resting place to deflate
Avoid walking or other exertion if your knees are sore. Lie on a couch and place your feet on the arm of the couch, placing a high cushion under the knees to help reduce swelling and consequently pain in the knees.
3. Comfortable shoes
Wear comfortable shoes to support your feet. The jump should be of the wedge type or Anabela, of maximum 2.5 cm, with rubber sole. Also wear comfortable clothing for easy movement.
Other important tips are: do not jump, do not run and do not use high heels. Taking a painkiller, such as Paracetamol, or applying an anti-inflammatory ointment, such as Cataflan, may help to combat knee pain, but if the pain persists for more than 3 days or if it gets progressively worse, because it may be necessary to do physiotherapy or, in the most serious cases, to have surgery.
Pain in the front of the knee is very common in young women who do not practice physical activity, and the main cause of this pain is a condition called patellar chondromalacia, which is characterized by the friction of the thigh bone with the patella.
