Topamax is a medication used to treat epilepsy, Lennoxx-Gastaut syndrome, in children over 2 years of age, and is also used in the preventive treatment of migraine in adults. It uses topiramate as the active substance and is available in the form of capsules and coated tablets that act on the central nervous system.
Topamax can be commercially found as generic drug companies: Ache, EMS, Eurofarma, Nature's Plus, Sandoz or Sigma Pharma.
Indications
Epilepsy; Lennox-Gastault syndrome; and in the prophylactic treatment of migraine.
Side effects
Abdominal pain; anorexia; nausea; weight loss; changes in taste; decreased ability to concentrate and memory; confusion; speech disorders; emotional instability and mood disorders; depression; behavioral changes; changes in walking; paresthesia; dizziness; somnolence; asthenia; changes in vision; diplopia; psychotic symptoms; aggressiveness and leucopenia.
Contraindications
Pregnancy; breast-feeding; renal and hepatic impairment.
Important :
- The use of topiramate with phenytoin increases its concentrations of and interacts with the other antiepileptics;
- Treatment with topiramate may decrease the effects of contraception;
- Topiramate should not be discontinued abruptly;
- Topiramate is not advised in acute cases of migraine.
