The multidisciplinary health team is formed by a group of health professionals who work together in order to reach a common goal.
For example, the team is usually made up of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, nutritionists, speech therapists and / or occupational therapists who come together to decide what the goals will be for a particular patient, which may be, for example, eating alone.
How it works
With the objective of helping the patient to eat alone, each professional must do whatever is within their area of training to achieve this common goal.
Thus, the doctor can prescribe drugs that fight pain, the nurse can give injections and treat oral hygiene, the physiotherapist can teach exercises to strengthen the muscles of the arms, hands and chewing muscles.
While the nutritionist can indicate a pasty diet, to facilitate training, the speech therapist will treat all parts of the mouth and chewing and the occupational therapist will provide activities that make these same muscles work, without him realizing, as , for example, send a kiss to someone.
Who is part of the team
The multidisciplinary team can be composed of almost all medical specialties, as well as other health professionals, such as nurses, nutritionists, physiotherapists, pharmacists and health assistants.
Some of the medical specialties that can be part of the team are:
- Gastroenterologist;
- Hepatologist;
- Oncologist;
- Pulmonologist;
- Cardiologist;
- Urologist;
- Psychiatrist;
- Gynecologist;
- Dermatologist.
The choice of specialties and health professionals varies according to the problems and symptoms of each patient and, therefore, they must always be adapted to each person.
