To make mouth-to-mouth breathing, you first need to know if the victim is breathing. To do this, place your index finger very close to your nostrils and check for air.
If not, start mouth-to-mouth breathing as follows:
- If possible, lay the victim on the floor, upside down and turn his or her head a little way back, leaving the airways freer, as shown in figure 1;
- Open the victim's mouth and see if there is anything blocking his throat. If present, remove with tweezers, or with fingers;
- Cover the victim's nose and inhale deeply;
- Release all the air in the victim's mouth and observe his chest, which must fill with air and rise, as shown in figure 2;
- If she does not breathe on her own again, repeat mouth-to-mouth breathing, about 20 times a minute.
Also observe if the victim has the heartbeat, putting her ear on the victim's left breast. If these are absent, insert 5 mouth-to-mouth breaths with a heart massage until the victim breathes on his own again.
