Using a nasal decongestant containing a substance called phenylephrine drops or Spray equals pressure on the tympanic membranes, reducing congestion and preventing the middle barotitis.
The middle barotitis, or aerotitis, is the middle ear lesion caused by the air pressure difference between the two sides of the tympanic membrane in the ears. When there is an obstruction due to scars, infection or allergy, the air can not reach the middle ear, damaging the tympanic membrane, causing pain, its rupture and bleeding.
Pressure in the middle ear can also be equalized and discomfort relieved by open mouth breathing, chewing gum or swallowing.
Sudden changes in pressure during a flight or dive cause the person to feel pain or have their ears clogged, especially if they have an infection or allergy that affects the nose and throat. The fluid from the inner ear may leak out into the middle ear, culminating in hearing loss or vertigo.
