The symptoms of amebiasis may vary, but in general they are:
- Abdominal pain;
- Mild or acute diarrhea with presence of blood or mucus;
- Fever and
- Chills.
In more severe cases this infection spreads through the body through the bloodstream reaching the liver lungs and even the brain. The skin around the buttocks and genitals can also be infected.
Amoebiasis can be fatal depending on the volume of amoebae ingested and also on the individual's immune status. The risk groups are children and the elderly.
Treatment for amebiasis
The treatment for amoebiasis is done by taking:
- Single dose of 2g or 500mg, 3 times daily for 5 days of Secnidazole, or
- 750mg, 3 times a day for 10 days of metronidazole, in case of extraintestinal amebiasis, for example.
In addition it is important to drink plenty of water and daily take the homemade serum for electrolyte balance.
