Dense foam sclerotherapy is a type of treatment that completely eliminates varicose veins and small vessels. The technique is to apply a sclerosing substance called Poidocanol, as a foam, directly into the varicose veins until they disappear.
Foam sclerotherapy is effective in microvarices and varicose veins of up to 2 mm, completely eliminated. In varicose veins of greater caliber, this treatment may not give the best result, but is able to decrease its size, requiring more than 1 application in the same varix.
How is the treatment done?
This treatment is relatively simple, but should only be performed by the physician, preferably the angiologist. Initially the doctor injects the medication into the vein that is feeding the vines until they disappear and become slightly white as shown in the following pictures.
This therapy causes a certain amount of pain and discomfort, not only from the needle bite but from the medicine entering the vein, but most people tolerate this pain well.
After the application of the foam treatment, it is recommended that the person use elastic compression stockings, Kendall type, to improve venous return and decrease the chances of new varicose veins appear.
It is also indicated that the person does not expose himself to the sun to avoid that the region is stained. If necessary, a sunscreen should be used throughout the treated area.
Is this treatment definitive?
The elimination of varicose veins and small vessels with foam sclerotherapy is practically definitive because the treated vessel will no longer have varicose veins, however, other varicose veins may arise because it also has a hereditary characteristic.

The price of each session varies between 200 and 300 reais and the number of sessions varies according to the amount of varicose veins that the person has.
Sclerotherapy risks with foam
The risks of foam sclerotherapy are minimal, however, and can rarely cause deep venous thrombosis and embolism, which can cause clots to travel through the body and reach the lungs, for example.
