Fluphenazine is an antipsychotic known commercially as Flufenan.
This drug is for oral and injectable use, which improves psychotic states by acting to block neurotransmitters, causing changes in the functioning of the central nervous system.
Flufenazine should only be given under medical advice and should not be used in children under 6 years of age.
Indications for Fluphenazine
Psychosis: schizophrenia; manic-depressive individuals; chronic neurogenic pain.
Side Effects of Fluphenazine
Ocular changes; weight gain; altered musculature; inability to remain seated; somnolence; decreased reflexes; difficulties in performing voluntary movements.
Contraindications of Fluphenazine
Children under 6; diseases accompanied by coma; individuals with brain damage; individuals with cardiovascular diseases; hypersensitivity to Fluphenazine;
How to use Fluphenazine
Oral use
Adults and children over 12 years
- Start treatment with 0.5 to 10 mg per day in divided doses every 6 to 8 hours. The dose can be carefully increased to 20 mg per day.
Children aged 6 to 12 years
- Start treatment with 0.25 to 3.5 mg per day in divided doses every 4 or 6 hours. The maximum dose is 10 mg per day.
Caution : Do not take antacid or antidiarrheal with Fluphenazine.
Injectable use
Adults and children over 12 years
- Inject 25 mg Fluphenazine every 2 weeks.
