Interrupted intercourse consists of withdrawing the penis from within the vagina seconds before ejaculation. This technique is usually used by teens who are afraid of getting pregnant, but this is not a safe method to avoid unwanted pregnancy, having an 18% chance of failure, which is considered quite high.
The woman can get pregnant through intercourse interrupted for two reasons:
- Because the man may have difficulty controlling the time of ejaculation and it ends up happening when the penis is still inside the vagina;
- Because even before ejaculation, there is a man-made lubricating liquid, which contains small amounts of sperm, which can reach the egg, starting the pregnancy.
Another disadvantage is that intercourse is interrupted and does not prevent against sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia and the HIV virus and therefore its practice is totally inadvisable. Ideally, the couple use a walk for each intimate contact because it protects them from pregnancy and also gynecological diseases. But in addition there are other excellent contraceptive methods to avoid pregnancy.
When coitus interruption may be a good option
When a woman has a very regular menstrual cycle and is able to know exactly when her fertile period is every month, withdrawal can be a possibility if the couple does not have access to any other contraceptive method, although it is very risky, and there is the possibility of becoming pregnant.
