Ertapenem is an antibiotic indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe infections, such as intra-abdominal, gynecological or skin infections, and should be administered by a vein or muscle injection by a nurse.
This antibiotic, known commercially as Invanz, is produced by the laboratory Merck Sharp & Dohme Pharmaceuticals and can be used by adults or children.
Ertapenem Indications
Ertapenem is indicated for the treatment of intra-abdominal infections, gynecological infections, skin and soft tissue infections, urinary tract infections and pneumonia. It may also be indicated for the treatment of septicemia, which is an infection caused by bacteria in the blood.
In addition, it can be used to prevent infection at the site of surgical intervention after colorectal surgery in adults.
How to use Ertrapenem
Usually for adults, the dose is 1 gram per day, administered in the vein for 30 minutes or by a gluteal injection administered by the nurse.
In children between 3 months and 12 years of age, the dose is 15 mg / kg, twice a day, not exceeding 1 g / day, by injection into the vein.
The duration of treatment may vary from 3 to 14 days depending on the type and severity of the infection.
Side Effects of Ertrapenem
Side effects of this antibiotic include: headache, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, and complications in the infusion vein.
In children, diarrhea, diaper dermatitis, pain at the site of infusion, and changes in blood tests may occur.
Contraindications of Ertrapenem
This drug is contraindicated for patients with known hypersensitivity to any of its components or to other drugs of the same class, as well as patients intolerant to local analgesics.
