The test to diagnose gestational diabetes should be done between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy, even when the pregnant woman does not present symptoms such as an exaggerated increase in appetite or frequent urination. See the other symptoms in: Symptoms of gestational diabetes.
However, the test can also be done before 24 weeks when the pregnant woman has high glucose levels in some urine test or has risk factors such as being overweight, being over 25 years old, having a family history of diabetes or have had gestational diabetes in a previous pregnancy, for example.
Generally, the diagnostic test for gestational diabetes is done in the morning and the only preparation is to stay at least 8 hours fast until you ingest 75 g of a very sugary liquid in the hospital.
How is the gestational diabetes test done?
The diagnostic test for gestational diabetes is done as follows:
- Fasting for 8 hours, but not exceeding 14 hours;
- Drink 75 g of Dextrosol in the laboratory or clinic of clinical analysis;
- Remove a blood sample immediately after ingestion of the liquid;
- Remain at rest for about 2 hours;
- Remove a blood sample after 1 hour and 2 hours of waiting.
After the examination the woman can return to normal eating and wait for the result. If the result is altered and diabetes is suspected, the obstetrician may refer the pregnant woman to a nutritionist to start a proper diet.
Test results for gestational diabetes
The test results indicate the presence of gestational diabetes when:
Time after the exam | Amount of sugar |
Immediately after the exam | Greater than 92 mg / dL |
1 hour after the exam | Superior 180 mg / dL |
2 hours after the exam | Greater than 155 mg / dL |
However, even if blood glucose levels are above these values, it is not always a sign of gestational diabetes, especially when there are no risk factors, so your doctor may want another blood test to confirm the diagnosis.
If the result indicates that you have gestational diabetes, see what the diet should be like in: What to eat in gestational diabetes.
