To protect yourself from exposure to nuclear radiation and its effects in the event of a nuclear accident you need to:
- Limit the exposure time to the radiation source.
- Go as far as possible from the source of radiation. In the case of a nuclear accident at a plant it is necessary to evacuate the perimeter around the radiation leak and the distance will depend on the amount of the leak.
- Wear suitable clothing that will hinder the passage of radiation to the skin. In areas contaminated by nuclear radioactivity, smoking, eating or drinking water is prohibited.
The World Health Organization also advises people to wear vinyl gloves, masks to filter the air and frequently wash their hands avoiding to reach their mouths.
Radioactive contamination can occur externally through the contaminated environment or through ingestion of contaminated food. Both types of radiation can be life threatening.
