Beach mycosis, also known as white pityriasis or pityriasis versicolor is a fungal infection caused by the fungus Malassezia furfur, which produces azelaic acid that interferes with the pigmentation of the skin due to the inhibition of melanin production, leading to the formation of spots that are more common on the back and shoulders and that become more visible after sun exposure.
The treatment of beach mycosis consists, in most cases, of the application of creams, ointments or lotions with antifungal, which can be recommended by the doctor.
What are the symptoms
The signs and symptoms that can occur in people with beach heart ring are the appearance of spots that usually appear on the back, chest, neck and arms, skin peeling and mild to moderate itching.
Possible causes
The fungus that causes the beach mycosis can be found on healthy skin without causing the disease, because it only causes the disease when it multiplies.
The most common causes that lead to the development of this fungus on the skin are hot and humid weather, weakening of the immune system, hormonal changes or having oily skin.
How is the treatment done?
Treatment usually consists of applying creams, ointments or lotions with antifungal in the composition, such as cyclopirox, clotrimazole or ketoconazole, for example. If beach mycosis is severe and does not respond to topical antifungal agents, it may be necessary to take antifungal tablets such as fluconazole or itraconazole.
Even after treatment, the skin may continue to have blemishes, because it takes some time for the blemish to re-produce melanin in the patch region to smooth the skin tone. In addition, the infection may return again, especially when the weather is hot and humid, and in these cases it may be necessary to do a preventive treatment, which consists of taking antifungal drugs once or twice a month.
Home treatment
One way to avoid a beach ringworm is to strengthen the immune system. A good way to do this is to take half a teaspoon of echinacea extract 2 times a day for 10 days, take a 3 day break and then repeat another 10 days. Learn more benefits of echinacea.
