Chemical dependence is characterized by the need to use drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, crack and alcohol, among others, or drugs that initially provide a sensation of pleasure and well-being, but which cause great harm to the body, especially to the central nervous system, leaving the individual completely dependent on increasing doses to supposedly achieve the well being that initially reached with small doses.
Is chemical dependence sickness?
Chemical dependency is considered a disease because it has a biological basis, characteristic signs and symptoms, a course and predictable results and therefore must be properly treated so that it can be cured.
Does chemical dependence have a cure?
The chemical dependency of drugs or illicit substances has a cure, but in order to achieve it, it takes a lot of dedication from the chemist and the family, because the treatment is intense and causes great suffering for all involved. This is the only way out to preserve one's life. In the case of the chemical dependence of licit drugs such as medicines, although the cure is more easily achieved, the individual may also suffer during the process.
Treatment for chemical dependency
Treatment for chemical dependence on illicit drugs can be done with or without the consent of the dependent chemist through the use of drugs and monitoring of health professionals as a physician, nurse and psychologist, family and true friends.
Generally, hospitalization in a clinic for drug addicts lasts 3 months and costs between 5 and 10, 000 reais, but the SUS provides free treatment for drug addicts through the CAPS. More information on where to get free treatment can be found on the Ministry of Health website.
In the case of chemical dependence caused by taking medicines such as painkillers or sleeping pills (chemical dependence on licit drugs), the treatment consists in reducing the dose of the medicine systematically guided by the doctor, since when you stop taking the drug suddenly a rebound effect and the individual can not stop the addiction.
