Indications of Benzocaine
Benzocaine is a topical anesthetic that can be used in the throat, gums, vagina and skin.
This component is usually present in many medicines indicated for the treatment of oropharyngeal irritations and pains of infectious origin or in minor surgeries to the skin, as well as in cases of amidalitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, gingivitis, stomatitis, angina of Vincent and aphthae.
How to use Benzocaine
- Adults and children over 6 years: it is necessary to apply on the area, that is to be anesthetized, up to 4 times a day;
- Children between 2 and 6 years of age, debilitated and elderly patients: apply to the area to be anesthetized up to two or three times a day, as they may be more sensitive to toxicity.
When applying for dentistry, gastroenterology and otorhinolaryngology, a small amount of gel should be applied at the site to be anesthetized.
In gynecology, obstetrics and dermatology, a deeper absorption should be ensured and therefore several applications should be performed, waiting about 30 seconds after each application.

Benzocaine has side effects such as contact dermatitis, burning sensation in the mouth, cyanosis and hardening of the mucous membranes.
Contraindications of Benzocaine
Bezocaine is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to benzocaine and other local anesthetics derived from p-aminobenzoic acid or hypersensitivity to any of the excipients.
In addition, it should not be applied to the eyes or to children under 2 years of age and to avoid using the gel to treat pregnant women, especially in the early stages of pregnancy.
