The uterine infection happens due to the development of bacteria inside the uterus, generating symptoms like fever above 38ºC, vaginal bleeding and abdominal pain.
Uterine infection should be treated as soon as possible to avoid serious complications, such as generalized infection, so a woman should consult her gynecologist whenever she has any change in menstruation or bleeds outside the menstrual period.
Symptoms of uterine infection
Symptoms of uterine infection may include:
- Fever above 38ºC and chills;
- Vaginal bleeding outside of menstruation;
- Fetid or pus-like discharge;
- Abdominal pain with no apparent cause;
- Pain during intimate contact.
In some cases, uterine infection may not cause symptoms and is only diagnosed when the woman develops endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, or Asherman's syndrome.

What Causes Uterine Infection
The most common causes of uterine infection are:
- After cesarean, due to the presence of scars in the uterus
- After normal delivery, due to the presence of placental debris inside the uterus.
However, uterine infection can also be caused by sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea and chlamydia.
Treatment for uterine infection
The treatment for uterine infection should be directed by the gynecologist and is usually done in a hospital environment with the use of antibiotics such as Ampicillin, Gentamicin or Penicillin for about 7 days.
