Elephantiasis is a disease transmitted by the Culex, Mansonia, Aedes and Anopheles mosquito, common in regions of humid climate and high temperatures. The incubation time of the virus varies from 1 to several months until the first symptoms of the disease appear, which are:
- pains for no apparent reason in the affected leg;
- swelling in the groin;
- chills;
- fever;
- red spots on the leg and scrotum;
- increased volume in the affected limb;
- milky or bloody urine.
Elephantiasis is an infection that blocks the lymphatic vessels preventing the circulation of the lymph, causing the swelling and other symptoms described above. Its treatment is made with medicines that kill the parasites present in the bloodstream.
In more severe cases there may be destruction of the lymph nodes being necessary to perform surgery for its repair.
