Having to go often in the bathroom to pee is usually a normal symptom, especially when you drank plenty of fluids during the day. However, when it comes up without explanation it can be a sign of some health problems such as urinary tract infection, diabetes or even prostate enlargement in man.
Polyuria is the scientific name for excess urine that occurs when you eliminate more than 3 liters of pee in 24 hours. It is more common for the person to go to the bathroom often to do small amount of pee than the person who actually does a large amount of urine a day. To clear up this doubt and to be able to identify if the person really is eliminated much pee, the doctor can request a test of urine of 24 hours.
1. Drink plenty of water, coffee, or alcohol
When drinking too much water it is expected that all water will be eliminated through the urine and therefore its volume and frequency are expected to increase, being only a normal response of the organism. This can also happen after eating foods high in water or after overconsumption of salt or sodium-rich foods like ham, mortadella or chips, for example.
Also, drinking too much coffee or other foods that contain caffeine like black tea, chocolate and matte tea can also increase urinary frequency because in addition to having water, caffeine is a natural diuretic. Another diuretic source is the alcoholic beverage which is not a good option to take when you are thirsty because it does not moisturize but instead dehydrates.
2. Take diuretics
Large amounts of urine can be caused by taking diuretics like Furosemide or Aldactone that can be used to control health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure and even weight loss.
3. Urinary tract infection
Increased frequency of urination may be caused by a urinary tract infection when other symptoms such as pain or burning on urination are present and urination is urgently needed. Another characteristic sign is when the person rushes to the bathroom because he needs to pee and when he gets there, he does not have as much urine as he expected.
