Memantine hydrochloride is an oral medication used to improve the memory function of people with Alzheimer's.
This medicine can be found in pharmacies with the name of Ebixa.
What is it for
Memantine hydrochloride is indicated for the treatment of severe and moderate cases of Alzheimer's disease.
How to use
The most common dose is 10 to 20 mg per day. Usually the doctor says:
- Start with 5 mg - 1x daily, then go to 5 mg, 2 times daily, then 5 mg in the morning and 10 mg in the afternoon, finally 10 mg twice daily, which is the target dose. For safe progression, the 1-week minimum interval between dose increases should be adhered to.
This medicine should not be used in children and adolescents.
Possible Side Effects
The most common side effects are: mental confusion, dizziness, headache, drowsiness, fatigue, cough, difficulty breathing, constipation, vomiting, increased pressure, back pain.
Less common reactions include heart failure, fatigue, fungal infections, confusion, hallucinations, vomiting, changes in gait and venous blood clotting such as thrombosis and thromboembolism.
When not to be used
Pregnancy risk B, breastfeeding, severe kidney damage. It is also not recommended in case of allergy to memantine hydrochloride or to any other component of the formula.
The use of this medicine should not be used in case of taking the medicines: amantadine, ketamine and dextromethorphan.
While using this medication it is not recommended to consume alcoholic beverages.
