Ivy is a medicinal plant with green, fleshy and shiny leaves, which can be used as a home remedy for cough, and is also found in the composition of some beauty products, such as creams against cellulite and wrinkles.
The scientific name of ivy is Hedera helix and it can be purchased in the industrialized version in health food stores and in handling pharmacies, in the form of syrup or capsules, for example.
What is Hera for?
Ivy has analgesic, expectorant, soothing, stimulating, healing, moisturizing, vasodilating and lipolytic properties and can be used to treat:
- Cold;
- Cough with phlegm;
- Whooping cough;
- Bronchitis;
- Laryngitis;
- Drop;
- Rheumatism;
- Liver diseases;
- Spleen problems;
- Biliary problems.
In addition, ivy can be used to help treat cellulite, ulcers, inflammation and fight some parasites, such as lice, for example.
How to use ivy
All parts of fresh ivy are toxic and therefore should not be used in this form. Thus, the consumption of ivy is only recommended when the plant is in the composition of medicines purchased at the pharmacy, which can be in the form of a pill or syrup, and which should be used as directed by the doctor or herbalist.
Side effects and contraindications of ivy
When consumed in excess, ivy can cause vomiting, diarrhea, headache and contact allergy, for example. In addition, it is recommended that its use should not be made by pregnant women or those who are breastfeeding, and it is not recommended to use it by people who are using cough medicine.
