Utrogestan is a medicine that uses active substance progesterone and is used to supplement the amount of progesterone in the body in cases where deficiency of progesterone production by the ovaries occurs.
Utrogestan is produced by the Besins laboratory and can be purchased in pharmacies as soft gelatin capsules of 100 mg or 200 mg, which can be used either orally or vaginally.
Utrogestan Indications
Utrogestan is indicated:
- Oral use: pain and other alterations of the menstrual cycle, absence of menstruation, benign alterations of the breast, luteal insufficiency, premenopause and hormone replacement of menopause;
- Vaginal route: ovarian failure, decreased ovarian function, in vitro fertilization cycles or intracytoplasmic sperm injection, subfertility or infertility, threatened abortion or abortion prevention in case of cervical insufficiency.

How to use Utrogestan
Utrogestan should be used as follows:
- Oral use: with a glass of water, away from meals and on an empty stomach, preferably at night, before bed. Utrogestan should not be administered with food and its dose varies according to the problem to be treated;
- Vaginal: Insert the gelatin capsule deep into the vagina, the dose of the drug also varying with the problem being treated.
It is not recommended to drive or operate machines after consumption of Utrogestan.
Side effects of Utrogestan
Side effects of Utrogestan include tiredness, swelling, headache, changes in weight due to increased or loss of appetite, severe vaginal bleeding, irregular menstrual periods, drowsiness, irritability, dizziness, nausea, depression, acne, increased or decreased body hair, itching, dark spots on the skin and pain in the legs.
Contraindications of Utrogestan
Utrogestan is contraindicated in cases of cancer of the breast or genitalia, genital bleeding without definite cause, stroke, liver disease, incomplete abortion, liver cancer, thromboembolic diseases, thrombophlebitis, porphyria and hypersensitivity to any of the components of the formula.
Utrogestan may be used during pregnancy under the prescription of an obstetrician.
