Treatment for neurofibromatosis can be done by surgery to remove tumors that are causing pressure on the organs or reducing their volume through radiotherapy. However, there is no specific treatment to cure neurofibromatosis or to prevent the onset of new tumors.
If the patient has other symptoms, such as developmental or growth problems, balance problems or bone problems, for example, it is important to be accompanied by specialized professionals, such as a physiotherapist, osteopath, speech therapist or psychologist.
In more severe cases, where malignant tumors arise and the patient develops cancer, surgery may be needed to remove the tumor and radiation therapy or chemotherapy after surgery to reduce the risk of cancer returning.
How to control neurofibromatosis
Since there is no specific treatment for neurofibromatosis, it is recommended that at least every year the patient perform several tests, such as a skin examination, a vision test, a bone examination, an examination to evaluate the development and the skills such as reading, writing or comprehension; to control the disease, assess its progression and initiate treatment if necessary.
Genetic counseling is important for those who want to have children because it is very common genetic inheritance from parents to children.
