How to use
The mode of use of Daraprim varies according to the purpose of treatment and the age of the patient, and the general guidelines include:
Prevention of malaria
- Adults and children over 10 years: 1 tablet per week;
- Children between the ages of 5 and 10: ½ tablet per week;
- Children under 5 years: ¼ tablet per week.
Treatment of malaria
- Adults and children over 14 years: 2 to 3 tablets together with 1000 mg to 1500 mg of single dose sulfadiazine;
- Children aged 9 to 14 years: 2 tablets together with 1000 mg of single dose sulfadiazine;
- Children aged 4 to 8 years: 1 tablet together with 1000 mg of single dose sulfadiazine;
- Children under 4 years: ½ tablet together with 1000 mg of sulfadiazine in a single dose.
Side effects
The main side effects of Daraprim include skin allergy, palpitations, nausea, cramps, diarrhea, lack of appetite, blood in the urine and changes in blood test.
Contraindications
Daraprim is contraindicated in patients with secondary megaloblastic anemia due to folate deficiency or with hypersensitivity to pyrimethamine or any of the components of the formula.
