Canagliflozin is a substance that blocks the action of a protein in the kidneys that reabsorbs urine sugar and releases it back into the blood. Thus, by using this substance it is possible to increase the amount of sugar eliminated in the urine and lower blood sugar levels and is therefore widely used in the treatment of diabetes.
This substance can be bought in the form of a medicine at a conventional pharmacy under the trade name Invokana after the receipt of a prescription.
Price
This medicine can be sold in two dosages of 100 or 300 mg, and the price can vary between 50 and 200 reais, depending also on the amount of tablets in the package. There is no generic version of this medicine.
What is it for
Invokana is indicated for the control of blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes and over the age of 18 years.
In some cases, canagliflozin can still be used to lose weight faster, however it is necessary to prescribe a doctor and a nutritionist for a balanced diet.
How to use
The starting dose is usually 100 mg once daily, however, after renal function tests the dose may be increased to 300 mg if tighter control of blood sugar levels is required.
Possible side effects
The most common side effects of canagliflozin include a marked reduction in blood sugar levels, dehydration, dizziness, blood pressure lowering, constipation, increased thirst, nausea, skin rash, more frequent urinary infections, candidiasis, and changes of the hematocrit in the blood test.
Who should not use
This medicine is contraindicated for pregnant and lactating women, as well as people with type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or hypersensitivity to any of the components of the formula.
