Ampicillin is an antibiotic used in case of infection by gram positive or gram negative bacteria.
- Gram-positive bacteria : alpha and beta-hemolytic streptococci; Strreptococcus pneumoniae ; non-penicillin-producing staphylococci; Bacilus anthracis ; Clostridia sp ; Coryebacterium xerosis and most strains of enterococci.
- Gram-negative bacteria : Haemophylus influenzae ; Neisseria gonorrhoeae; Neisserie meningitidis; Proteus mirabilis ; many strains of Salmonella; Shigella and Escherichia coli.
Indications of Ampicillin
Bacterial endocarditis; biliary infection; gynecological infection; intestinal infection; obstetric infection; respiratory infection; urinary infection; bacterial meningitis; septicemia; typhoid fever.

Contraindications for Ampicillin

How to use Ampicillin
The dose will depend on the severity of the infection, but may be:
- Adults : 250 to 500 mg tablets every 6 hours. Typhoid fever: 25mg per kg of body weight every 6 hours. Maximum dose: 4g per day.
- Children under 20 kg : tablets of 50 to 100 mg per kg body weight per day, every 6 or 8 hours.
- Children weighing 20kg or more : same dosage as adults.
