The treatment for filariasis is directed to prevent the evolution and to correct the changes caused by the disease through medical methods.
The drugs used in individuals with filariasis are called Diethylcarbamazine and Ivermectin. Treatment with diethylcarbamazine is done for 12 days, but in some individuals this drug does not demonstrate efficacy on adult parasites, in those cases a surgical intervention is necessary to remove the parasites and the drug treatment can be repeated.
Only one dose of Ivermectin is administered per year, the exact treatment time is undefined but it is estimated that this drug should be used for 5 to 10 years. Treatment time varies, as individuals respond differently to medications.
