The diaphragm is a contraceptive method that has the form of a flexible ring surrounded by a thin layer of rubber that prevents the sperm from entering the uterus, preventing fertilization of the egg and, consequently, pregnancy.
Generally, the woman should consult a gynecologist to assess, through a touch examination, the appropriate size of the diaphragm, since it needs to completely cover the cervix to prevent the passage of sperm.
How to put
To place the diaphragm correctly you must follow the following steps:
- Put some spermicide cream inside the diaphragm to increase effectiveness;
- Bend the diaphragm with the round part down;
- Insert the diaphragm into the vagina with the round part down;
- Push the diaphragm and adjust it to fit correctly.
The diaphragm should be removed after at least 6 hours of intimate contact so that all sperm die. However, it should not remain longer than 24 hours in the womb for no infection to occur.
After being withdrawn, the diaphragm should be washed with cold water and neutral soap, naturally dried and stored in its packaging.
The diaphragm is non-disposable and can be used for up to 2 years. However, if it has a hole, is wrinkling or if the woman becomes pregnant or gaining weight, the diaphragm should be replaced.
To function properly, the diaphragm should be placed about 15 to 30 minutes before intimate contact and taken out only 12 hours after the interface.
Advantages and disadvantages of the diaphragm
The main advantages of the diaphragm include:
- Prevention against pregnancy;
- It has no hormonal side effects;
- Usage can be interrupted at any time;
- It is easy to use;
- It is seldom felt by the partner;
- Can last up to 2 years;
- You can not get into the womb or get lost in the woman's body;
- It protects women from certain STDs, such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, pelvic inflammatory disease and trichomoniasis.
On the other hand, the disadvantages of the diaphragm are:
- Has a 10% chance of failure;
- Must be sanitized after each use;
- The size of the diaphragm should be evaluated when the woman gains weight;
- It can not be used during menstruation;
- Does not protect against most STDs;
- May cause vaginal irritation.
The use of this contraceptive is indicated for women who have had sexual intercourse and do not have a urinary, cervical, or vaginal infection. Women who are virgin, allergic to latex, or who have problems with the cervix can not use the diaphragm.
