Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant medicine used to treat seizures and neuropathic pain, being marketed in the form of tablets or capsules.
This medicine can be sold under the name Gabapentin, Gabaneurin or Neurotin for example and is produced by EMS or Sigma Pharma and can be used by adults or children.
Indications of gabapentin
Gabapentin is indicated for the treatment of various forms of epilepsy, as well as for relieving prolonged pain caused by nerve damage, as in cases of diabetes, shingles, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, for example.
How to take
Gabapentin should only be used with advice from a physician, but the usual dose usually for the treatment of epilepsy is 300 to 900 mg, 3 times daily. However, the doctor will decide the dose according to the real of each person, never exceeding 3600mg per day.
In the case of neuropathic pain, the treatment must always be done with the physician's advice, since the dose must be adapted over time according to the intensity of the pain.
Possible side effects
The most common side effects of this medication include fever, drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, fever, skin rashes, change in appetite, confusion, aggressive behavior, blurred vision, high blood pressure, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, constipation, joint pain, incontinence or difficulty with erection.
Who should not take
Gabapentin is contraindicated in pregnancy, lactation, and in case of allergy to gabapentin. In addition, the doses should be adapted in patients with renal problems.
