How to Use Liothyronine
Oral use
Adults
Mild hypothyroidism: Start at 25 mcg per day. Adose can be increased from 12.5 to 25 mcg at intervals of 1 to 2 weeks. Maintenance: 25 to 75 mcg per day.
Myxedema: Start with 5 mcg per day. The dose may be increased from 5 to 10 mcg per day, every 1 or 2 weeks. Upon reaching 25 mcg per day, the dose may be further increased from 12.5 to 25 mcg every 1 to 2 weeks. Maintenance: 50 to 100 mcg per day.
Male Infertility (due to hypothyroidism): Start with 5 mcg per day. According to motility and sperm counts the dose may be increased from 5 to 10 mcg every 2 to 4 weeks. Maintenance: 25 to 50 mch per day (rarely reaches this limit, which should not be exceeded).
Goiter Simple (non-toxic): Start at 5 mcg per day and increase by 5 to 10 mcg per day, every 1 to 2 weeks. When the daily dose of 25 mcg is reached, it may be increased from 12.5 to 25 mcg every 1 or 2 weeks. Maintenance: 75 mcg per day.
Seniors
They should start treatment with 5 mcg per day, increasing 5 mcg at intervals prescribed by the physician.
Children
Cretinism: Begin treatment as soon as possible with 5 mcg per day, increasing 5 mcg every 3 or 4 days, until the desired response is achieved. Maintenance doses vary according to the child's age:
- Up to 1 year: 20 mcg per day.
- 1 to 3 years: 50 mcg per day.
- Over 3 years: use the adult dose.
Attention: Doses should be given in the morning to avoid insomnia.
