Azathioprine is a medicine known commercially as Immunem and Imuran.
This oral medication increases antibody production and helps to decrease inflammation and is very effective in treating patients who have had an organ transplant.
Indications for Azathioprine
Chronic autoimmune hepatitis; anemia; severe rheumatoid arthritis, organ transplantation; lupus; polyarterite.
Side Effects of Azathioprine
Pregnancy risk D; women in the lactation phase.
Contraindications of Azathioprine
Individuals hypersensitive to azathioprine.
How to use Azathioprine
Oral use
Adults
- Organ Transplantation : Administer 3 to 5 mg per kg of body weight of azathioprine daily. The amount administered may be given as a single dose and treatment should begin on the day of transplantation or within 3 days.
- Severe rheumatoid arthritis : Administer 1 mg per kg body weight of azathioprine daily, single dose or divided into 2 doses.
Children
- Organ Transplantation : Administer 3 to 5 mg per kg of body weight of azathioprine daily.
