The symptoms of gonorrhea usually begin to manifest between 2 and 10 days after the contamination of the disease, which is mainly due to intimate contact without the use of a condom.
Gonorrhea is an infectious disease caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae, which usually reaches the region of the vagina, penis and anus. When not properly treated, this disease can lead to complications such as infertility or pelvic inflammatory disease, for example.
Thus, one must be attentive to the symptoms of this disease, which are different for man and woman, as shown below:
Gonorrhea in women
Although most women do not experience symptoms when they are infected with gonorrhea, the following signs may appear:
- Pain or burning when you urinate;
- Urinary incontinence;
- White-yellow discharge, similar to pus;
- Inflammation of the Bartholin glands, which are on the sides of the vagina and are responsible for the lubrication of the woman;
- Sore throat and voice impairment, when there is an oral intima relationship;
- Inflammation of the anus, when there is anal intima relationship.
When untreated, this disease can cause complications with sterility, ectopic pregnancy and chronic pelvic pain.
Gonorrhea in man
In men, the symptoms usually begin between 1 and 3 days after unprotected intimate contact, and may occur:
- Pain or burning when you urinate;
- Frequent urge to urinate;
- Low fever;
- Yellow discharge, similar to pus, coming out of the penis;
- Sore throat and voice impairment, when there is an oral intima relationship;
- Inflammation of the anus, when there is anal intima relationship.
When proper treatment is not done, complications such as urinary incontinence and weight sensation appear in the region of the penis.
Gonorrhea in Newborns
When the pregnant woman presents the disease and is not treated during pregnancy, the baby can be infected during childbirth, resulting in the so-called gonococcal conjunctivitis.
Thus, babies begin to show symptoms of pain and swelling in the eyes, purulent secretion and difficulty opening the eyes, which can lead to blindness when not treated properly. See more about gonorrhea in pregnancy.
