Nystatin is an antifungal medicine that can be used to treat oral or vaginal candidiasis, which can be found in drops or gynecological ointment, but should only be used when indicated by your doctor.
This medicine can be found in pharmacies in generic form being known only as Nystatin, but can also be found under other trade names like Albistin, Nistax, Fungistatin, Candistatin, Canditrat, Inofungin, Nistatec and Micostatin, for example.

What is it for
- Oral Suspension: For the treatment of oral (thrush), esophageal and intestinal candidiasis;
- Vaginal cream: For the treatment of vaginal candidiasis.
How to use
To apply the drops, you should wash your mouth properly, including cleaning dental prostheses. The contents should be kept inside the mouth for as long as possible before swallowing, and in infants one should apply half the dose on each side of the mouth.
Nystatin in drops:
- Adults: 5 to 10 mI, 3 or 4 times a day.
- Premature infants and underweight children: 1mI, 4 times per day.
- Infants: 1 to 2 mI, 4 times per day.
- Children of normal weight: 1 to 6 mI, 4 times a day.
After the symptoms disappear, the application should be continued for another 2 days to avoid recurrence.
Nystatin vaginal cream: Introduce the ointment into the vagina with an applicator, which equates to 4 g, for 14 consecutive days.
If symptoms do not go away within 14 days, return to the doctor.
Side effects
The major side effects of nystatin include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. In case of vaginal application can cause itching and burning.
Contraindications
Nystatin drops should not be used during pregnancy. Also do not use in case of allergy to nystatin or to the other components of the formula. You should discontinue treatment and seek medical advice immediately if you experience irritation or allergy to this medicine. Women who are breastfeeding should prefer to use the medicine away from breastfeeding because it is not yet known whether the drug passes through breast milk.
