Petasite is a medicinal plant, also known as Butterbur or broad-brimmed hat, and is widely used to prevent or treat migraine and to reduce the symptoms of allergy, such as itchy nose and watery eyes, for example because of its anti- inflammatory and analgesic.
Its scientific name is Petasites hybridus and can be bought at natural products stores, free fairs and some pharmacies.
What is Petasites hybridus
Due to its antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, diuretic and analgesic properties, Petasites hybridus is indicated for:
- Prevent and treat migraines and frequent and strong headaches;
- Treating pains caused by kidney stones or treating bladder pain;
- Improve respiratory rate in case of chronic diseases such as chronic bronchitis or asthma;
- Prevent the onset of asthma attacks;
- Decrease allergy symptoms such as itchy eyes and nose, sneezing, tearing and redness in the eyes.
In some cases, it may also help treat intestinal problems, such as severe belly pain or diarrhea, for example.
How to use
Generally, Petasites hybridus is used in capsules, twice a day and should only be taken as directed by the doctor, and the treatment may vary from 1 to 3 months, depending on the problem to be treated.
Possible side effects
Petasites hybridus may cause drowsiness, nausea, leg pain or stomach pain, and failure to follow the correct directions may result in liver malfunction.
Contraindications of Petasites hybridus
Petasites hybridus is contraindicated in people with plant allergy in pregnant women and women who are breastfeeding because it can reduce milk production.
